Provisional results for school applicants who took the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) have been made public by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
According to a statement issued by the Council on Monday, December 30, 2024, 781 candidates’ results were withheld, while 4,108 candidates’ subject results were cancelled.
209 people had their full results withheld for various alleged crimes, while 483 people had their entire results revoked for carrying cell phones into the exam room.
The results are available for applicants to view on the exam management body’s official website. A closer look at the data shows that, in comparison to the prior year, students’ performance in the three key disciplines of English language, integrated science, and social studies has decreased.
However, there was no comparable reduction in Core Mathematics.
Due to claims of conspiracy, 319 schools’ applicants’ subject results have been withheld.
Investigations into these situations are currently ongoing. Depending on how the investigations turn out, these candidates’ withheld results might be made public or cancelled, the statement continued.
The alleged malpractices include coordination among candidates, organised cheating that took place with the help of some supervisors and school officials, and bringing outside materials into the exam room, such as prepared notes, printed materials, and cell phones.
